Teaches: Hook
For twenty years, the nonprofit had been doing the work.
Outdoor education programs for youth. Curriculum built around land stewardship, wildfire ecology, the specific relationship between a watershed and the communities that depend on it. The programs were good. The outcomes were documented. The kids who went through them remembered what they learned.
The funding was fine. Not transformational — fine.
When Nina started working with the organization’s leadership, she asked a version of the question she always asks before building a Hook: What happens if nothing changes?
The answer they gave her was the polished one. Program reach would stay limited. The curriculum wouldn’t scale to the districts that needed it. Impact would remain local.
She pushed. No — what actually happens? To the land?
The development director went quiet for a moment, then said it plainly: the 1,200 acres they worked with sat at the edge of an expanding urban boundary. In fifty years, without a generation of young people who understood land stewardship and had the civic will to act on it, those acres would either become a buffer zone for a subdivision or a wildfire corridor. The outcome depended almost entirely on whether the next thirty years produced people who knew why it mattered and what to do about it.
That was the Hook.
Not “we provide outdoor education.” Not “youth programs build environmental awareness.” In fifty years, this specific piece of land becomes one of two things — and which one depends on the work we do in the next decade.
That’s a stake. That’s a reason to care before the story has even started.
The Story Cycle’s Hook element is often misunderstood as a clever opening — an anecdote, a surprising statistic, a provocative question. Those can all be hooks. But the Hook Nina teaches is structural, not decorative. It is the honest answer to what happens if nothing changes? — stated at the beginning, before context or credentials, because that’s when the audience decides whether to follow you.
For the wildfire curriculum nonprofit, the new Hook changed not just their pitch but the way they understood their own work. They had been telling a story about programming. The real story was about a landscape, a timeline, and a generation that would either be prepared or wouldn’t.
Their next fundraising campaign was oversubscribed by forty percent.
The stakes were always there. They just hadn’t been said out loud yet.
